Dr. Verellen received the M.Sc. degree in solid state physics at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, and a Ph.D. in medical sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Along his educational duties at the VUB in Biomedical Physics he is also guest professor at the University of Ghent for Biomedical Engineering, several continual education programs, and course director for Clinical Practice & Implementation of Image-Guided Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy at the ESTRO School of Radiotherapy and Oncology.

He is author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers (Hirsch-index: 30) and editor or contributing author of several books. His main interest is in the practical issues concerning implementation of conformal radiotherapy and image-guidance in a clinical environment, and safety and quality management in radiotherapy. He serve(s)d in the board of editors for the journals “Physics & Imaging in Radiation Oncology”, “Medical Physics”, “Journal of Radiosurgery and SBRT”, and “Radiation Oncology”. Dirk Verellen was awarded as Spinoza Honorary Professor of the University of Amsterdam in 2009, received the prestigious ESTRO Breur Award Lecture in 2015, and the Emanuel van der Schueren award lecture of the BVRO in 2017.

He serves as treasurer, member of the Board of Directors, the Physics Committee and the Radiation Oncology Safety Committee of ESTRO (European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology), and was membership officer 2011-2013.
