Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Department of General Pediatrics at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany.
After receiving his degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, Martin Schrappe entered a clinical speciality program for pediatric hematology and oncology at the Children’s Hospital of the Medical School Hannover, Germany. Between 1987 and 1990, he was awarded a research fellowship to perform basic and translational research at the Scripps Research Institute at La Jolla, California. There the topic was novel approaches for chemoimmunotherapy in pediatric tumors. He returned to Germany to continue his training in pediatrics and later in pediatric hematology and oncology at the Children’s Hospital of the Medical School in Hannover. Since then, his research activities focused on acute lymphoblastic leukemia in childhood, especially the impact of clinical and molecular prognostic factors for risk adapted therapy strategies.
In 1996, he became senior attending physician of the pediatric hematology/ oncology division at the Children’s hospital of the Medical School Hannover. Since 2000, Martin Schrappe is professor for pediatric hematology and oncology. In 2004, he became full professor of pediatrics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, and was assigned to serve as Director of the Department of General Pediatrics at the University Medical Center, Kiel. In 2001, he was elected Chairman of the International BFM Study Group. In August 2009, he was appointed member of the Board of SIOP-Europe. He became President of SIOPE in 2016. From 2011 to the end of 2015, he served as Activity Coordinator (1 of 3) in the European Network for Cancer Research in Children and Adolescents (ENCCA) as funded through EU-FP7.
Since 1986, he holds responsible positions within ALL-BFM clinical trials. In 1998, he became the study chairman of the ALL-BFM study group. He is also board member in various national and international clinical study groups for pediatric hematology and oncology.
In 1999, he received the Leukemia Clinical Research Award of DGHO, Germany. In 2007, he was admitted as fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. In 2014, he was awarded the “Deutscher Krebspreis 2014” (German Cancer Award 2014) by the Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Society of Oncology).
Martin Schrappe has extensively published in major medical journals including reviews and book chapters. He lectures on clinical and biological aspects of pediatric oncology with emphasis on leukemia therapy. He serves as reviewer in various journals such as “Leukemia”, “Journal of Clinical Oncology”, “Lancet”, “Lancet Oncology”, “Blood”, and “Pediatric Blood and Cancer”.President of SIOG.
