Peter Naredi is Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg since 2012.
He went to medical school at the university of Lund and then trained as Resident in surgery at the County hospital of Halmstad. In 1989 he moved to the Department of surgery at Sahlgrenska university hospital in Gothenburg. After defending a thesis in Tumour blood flow at the University of Gothenburg he did a postdoctoral period at the Cancer Center, University of California, San Diego, USA. In 1997 he moved to the University of Umeå and was appointed professor of surgery and chairman of the academic unit of surgery in 2003. He has specialized in cancer surgery, especially Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery and melanoma.
His main research interests are chemotherapy resistance, immunotherapy and treatment of primary and secondary liver tumours and pancreatic cancer. The translational research program is focused on novel mechanisms to prevent resistance to platinum compounds and the interaction with growth factor receptors. Within this field he has published in journals as Cell, Cancer Research and Diabetes. He was a pioneer in clinical trials using histamine to inhibit suppression of NK and T cells in treatment of melanoma and renal cell cancer.
Peter Naredi has always been involved in educational activities at both graduate and postgraduate levels. He was Chair of the ESSO education and training committee, a member of ACOE, faculty member at the FLIMS course.
Professor Naredi is Past-President of ECCO, Past-President of ESSO and Past-President of the Swedish surgical society and of the Scandinavian surgical society.
