NEWS: ECCO Celebrates World Cancer Day: “We Can. I Can”

World Cancer Day is a global event celebrated annually on February 4th.

An estimated 8.2 million individuals die from cancer each year, of which 4 million are between the ages of 30-69. This global movement seeks to diminish these statistics with increased awareness through education, and by pressing governments and individuals to take action. With the theme “We Can. I Can”, World Cancer Day is a unique initiative that explores how everyone has the ability to reduce cancer impact.

Organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), World Cancer Day supports the goals of the World Cancer Declaration. This agenda calls upon government leaders and health policy makers to implement initiatives that reduce the global health cancer burden through the integration of cancer control in the world health and development agenda.

Ahead of World Cancer Day, the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) joined the call on the European Union to put cancer research at the heart of its health and scientific agendas for the benefit of cancer patients across Europe and the scientific community. Read the joint open statement here.

The importance of increased dialogue and a multidisciplinary approach to tackling cancer impact were demonstrated at the ECCO2017 European Cancer Congress which took place just last week in Amsterdam (27-30 January 2017). Significant studies were released highlighting the importance of early detection practices and the link between healthy lifestyles and decreased cancer risk. Throughout this event, the need for a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care and treatment was highlighted.
