NEWS: ECCO and partners call on Juncker to #healthupeurope

The European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) has joined 38 partner organisations from across the healthcare spectrum in calling for European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to reaffirm health as one of the core responsibilities of the EU.

The call comes in response to a White Paper published by the European Commission exploring the Future of Europe in the wake of Brexit and other challenges. The matter of health policy has so far received scant attention in the process of determining the EU’s future. 39 principal European health NGOs have therefore written a joint letter to Mr Juncker urging him to remind him that:

  • 70% of Europeans want the EU to do more for health, according to the most recent Eurobarometer survey;
  • Without EU level action and support, EU citizens would be more at risk from health threats;
  • The Lisbon Strategy included a target of adding two healthy life years across the EU by 2020, a target that still needs to be met.
  • The majority of Member States want more EU action for health, especially disease prevention and support to increase the safety, quality and efficiency of care, to aid their own efforts to make their health systems more sustainable.

The signatory organisations call for an enhancement of EU action in health in future in order to bring the EU closer to its citizens, by protecting patients and consumers and improving people’s health.
